Program Description

Pharmacists, Pharmacy technicians, and student pharmacists.

Community pharmacy practice extends well beyond dispensing medications to include immunizations, medication management, health screenings, chronic disease support, patient counseling, and collaboration with other healthcare professionals. However, branding and public perceptions that portray pharmacists primarily as dispensers or retailers can limit patients' awareness and use of these broader clinical services. Colleges of pharmacy are preparing students for community practice through patient-care curricula, simulations, experiential education, interprofessional learning, and exposure to innovative practice models. Workforce development and job satisfaction are influenced by workload, compensation, autonomy, professional advancement, organizational support, and an inclusive workplace, while strong mentorship, meaningful experiential education, and exposure to diverse roles can help students and practitioners develop confidence, recognize career possibilities, and remain engaged in community pharmacy.

At the end of this presentation pharmacists, student pharmacists, and pharmacy technicians should be able to:

• Explain the differences in practice that exist outside of dispensing

• Recognize the role of branding and public perception in shaping patient understanding of community pharmacy services

• Describe how colleges of pharmacy are preparing students for community practice

• Identify factors that influence job satisfaction and workforce development in community pharmacy, including experiential education, mentorship, and exposure to diverse practice models
